For today’s motivational Monday, I’m discussing what yoga means to me personally.
For me, just as life is a journey yoga is Your Own Great Adventure.
I believe there are a lot of misconceptions about what yoga is.
Some common misconceptions are that it is an exercise or fitness style where you do poses and have to be very flexible to get into those bendy positions.
I appreciate the amazing people out there that can with a heck of a lot of practice make beautiful poses and post those amazing shapes to Instagram.
For me, the practice of yoga is more than poses it is what it creates within and through the whole self. It is an experience that differs each time and each day.
The meaning of the word ‘yoga’ means in more simple terms ‘to unite’.
When I teach yoga I usually have the feeling and the experience I’d like to facilitate, combined with my knowledge of yoga philosophy in combination with anatomy and breath to create an access point for the student to connect, and center, through the whole body, physically, energetically, and mentally.
I believe it is beneficial to many different individuals. Yoga for me is a starting point for self-learning, and self-development and can create self-acceptance, awareness, inquiry, and adaptability.
For me, yoga is a practice. And just as with any practice, it is an ongoing continuum of practice, activation, reflecting, and learning.
“Through yoga, we take off the shirt of ignorance, study it, and put it back on correctly, as a shirt of knowledge.”
I read this great quote in the book Light On Life by B.K.S Iyengar. This quote suggests that when we do yoga “we take off the shirt of ignorance” the shirt we believe we know well, we look into it and study it, and then we “put it back on correctly, as the shirt of knowledge.’’ This for me means that yoga gives us the power of perspective. It allows us time to look into ourselves and our own body, muscles, and energy to better understand what is happening.
When we do yoga, I believe we are going on an adventure. On this adventure, we are sparking some energy, and motivation to journey within and find out or learn something new from something we already think we know pretty well.
I believe this practice of yoga as Your Own Great Adventure is something we can apply any day, and the more we do it the more perspective we get.
For me, adventures only feel like an adventure when there is something to discover, and something to make an unusual and exciting or daring experience.
In the yoga classes that I teach, I invite you to begin Your Own Great Adventure. I teach classes and one-on-one sessions that are designed for anyone to delve into. I break the poses down to allow you to try new things at the pace that is right for you. I use a curated music playlist to ignite a connection from your brain to your movement to create a sensation on your journey of discovery.
